Book Club is sponsored by Carol Stream Woman’s Club but includes members and non-members. We meet once a month at a member’s home and enjoy discussing the month’s selection as well as refreshments and social “girl-friend” time. We don’t meet on a specific day of the month but the hostess for that month sets the day and time and sends out information via email. The information is also posted on the Woman’s Club’s Facebook page.
We welcome new members – come try us out. For information, call 630-200-3944 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
March Book Club Notes
|Thanks to Jan Neal for hosting the February discussion on “The Ride of Our Lives” by Mike Leonard. It seemed like everyone liked this light, fun true story of Mike Leonard and his family trip across the United States with his hilarious aging parents. After a discussion of the book, we settled down with popcorn and watched a DVD of highlights from the book that was published by Good Morning America.
The March books is, believe it or not, “March” by Geraldine Brooks. Winner of the 2006 Pulitzer Prize For Fiction. From the author of the acclaimed YEAR OF WONDERS, an historical novel and love story set during a time of catastrophe, on the front lines of the American Civil War. Acclaimed author Geraldine Brooks gives us the story of the absent father from Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women” – and conjures a world of brutality, stubborn courage and transcendent love. An idealistic abolitionist, March has gone as chaplain to serve the Union cause. But the war tests his faith not only in the Union – which is also capable of barbarism and racism – but in himself. As he recovers from a near-fatal illness, March must reassemble and reconnect with his family, who have no idea of what he has endured. A love story set in a time of catastrophe, March explores the passions between a man and a woman, the tenderness of parent and child, and the life-changing power of an ardently held belief.
Sue Evans has agreed to host the discussion on March 25th for the book “March” by Geraldine Brooks. Please RSVP on Meetup.
If you like to read ahead, the April book is “The Good Daughter” by Karen Slaughter. We are looking for an April hostess so please contact Sue Evans or Nancy Olson for more information or to volunteer to host.
